KREI, RDA Held Policy Seminar for Evaluating Public Interest Value of Agriculture

The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) and the Rural Development Administration (RDA) jointly held a policy seminar for assessing the public interest value of agriculture and increasing cooperation between the two institutions at RDA’s International Conference Hall, Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do.

KREI President Kim Changgil said, “This seminar will concretely identify the multifunctionality and public interest value of agriculture and establish the supporting logic.” RDA Administrator Ra Seungyong said, “I hope that this policy seminar will comprehensively analyze and re-evaluate the value of agricultural multifunctionality.”

In the joint seminar, the following presentations were made: “Functions and Roles of Soil for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Communities” by RDA; “The Value of Farmland Multifunctionality and Policy Direction” by KREI; and “Evaluation of the Ecological Service of Soil” by an external expert, Chungnam National University professor Kim Seongcheol. The presentations were followed by a wrap-up discussion on methods of assessing the public interest value of agriculture.

The two institutions will prepare a report that comprehensively evaluates the value of agriculture by late April based on the discussion results and private experts advice. So far, various results on the estimated value of agricultural value have been presented through different analysis methods and evaluation criteria. This time, however, the assessed value will be drawn by establishing comprehensive evaluation criteria. Also, KREI and RDA decided to continuously strengthen the two institutions’ cooperation for improving agricultural outlook information and so on in order to support national agricultural policy, including the stabilization of agricultural supply and demand.
