KREI Held International Workshop on Economic Assessment of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) held an International Workshop on the “Economic Assessment of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation” at KREI, Naju, Jeollanam-do on Nov. 6 to discuss the necessity and improvement of Korean economic models concerning climate change, and seek ways to respond to uncertainty regarding climate change with related experts at home and abroad.

Deputy Director Marco V. Sánchez Cantillo at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization made a presentation, “The Global Governance for Tackling Climate Challenges without Hampering Food Security: What is Next?” He argued that climate change responses and food security are very important in the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals, and climate-smart agriculture can be an alternative.

Through his presentation, “Quantitative Foresight Modeling with Climate Change Scenarios to Inform Global Agricultural R&D,” IFPRI senior research fellow Koo Jawoo forecasted that climate change would decrease the world’s crop output by about 7% by 2050, and increase prices of grains including corn, peanuts, and potatoes by 12-18%. He emphasized the need for R&D and investment in infrastructure to alleviate the problem.

KREI research fellow Sung Jaehoon, in his presentation, “Quantitative Evaluation of Korean Farms’ Vulnerability to Climate Change,” stressed that it is necessary to evaluate farms’ vulnerability to climate change before establishing the domestic agriculture sector’s climate change adaptation strategies. Particularly, he argued, “More detailed strategies are required to improve the efficiency of policies.”

Dr. Nicolaas B. P. Polman at Wageningen Economic Research in the Netherlands made a presentation, “Dutch Agriculture: Droughts and the Use of Biomass.” He said, “In response to the increase in droughts due to climate change, policies including a switch to alternative crops or drip irrigation can enhance farmers’ welfare.”

The presentations were followed by a discussion chaired by KREI President Kim Changgil. The following discussants presented various opinions for the effective use of economic models for responding to climate change: research fellow Jeon Jongahn at the APEC Climate Center, Idaho State University professor Ryu Jaehyun, Director Lee Sangmin of KREI’s Center for Forestry Policy Research, Chonnam National University professor Kim Yoonhyoung, and Konkuk University professor Jang Jaebong.
