Strengthening Food Security through International Agricultural Development Cooperation

 

The 2nd Regional Conference on Food Security




On November 6th, 2018, Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI, Kim, Changgil) held the 2nd Regional Conference on Food Security: Strengthening Food Security through International Agricultural Development Cooperation co-hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of Korea (MAFRA) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality of the Netherlands (MANF).

Hyoeun Jenny Kim, the Deputy Director General of Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), emphasized the international cooperation for strengthening and seeking a variety of ways to deal with the resilience and adaptation to the rapid climate change in the keynote speech.

In session 1, Dr. Jan Verhagen from Wageningen University & Research (WUR) emphasized on the importance of relevant policies for climate smart agriculture and climate smart agriculture should be included in the national development priorities. Mr. Kenneth Jakobsen shared successful case studies of efficient energy consumption and saving conducted in China and Singapore. Dr. Youngah Lim from KREI presented the current status of CSA and national strategies for R&D and policy making of CSA. Ms. Lucie Wassink, a policy coordinator of MANF, emphasized on the importance of finding solutions for climate change through open data.

In session 2, Dr. Gookhwan Kim from Rural Development Administration (RDA) represented that technology innovation enables agriculture more effective and productive introducing autonomous orchard robots. Dr. Michael Lay-Yee shared cases studies of provision of management skills and other relevant systems in order to increase the value-added of agricultural products. Paul Voutier, Director of Grow Asia, introduced Grow Asia model for value chain which enhances farmer’s income and maximize consumer’s utility. Dr. Daeseok Seo from KREI shared the research findings that greenhouse horticulture shows high productivity and represented international development cooperation cases conducted in Mongolia and Vietnam in line with greenhouse horticulture. 

In the last session, KREI President Kim, Changgil and the Vice Minister of MANF Marjolijn Sonnema led the wrap-up discussion. They agreed and emphasized on the capacity enhancement of farmers in order to strengthen food security, also ICT technology research cooperation for climate change should be implemented to achieve the ultimate goal, food security.
