The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) hosted the 2016 Agricultural Outlook Conference on Jan. 20 at The-K Hotel, Yangjae-dong, Seoul; on Jan. 22 at Chungcheongnam-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services; on Jan. 26 at KREI, Naju, Jeollanam-do; on Jan. 28 at Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services. The event was attended by the agriculture minister, local farmers, public officials and so on. In his opening address, KREI President Choi Sei-kyun said, "I hope that the contents of the presentations and discussion at this conference would help the agricultural policy authorities' establishment of mid- and long-term policies for a new year and farmers' decision-making," forecasting changes in 2016's environment including abnormal changes of weather due to super El Niño, unstable supply and demand of agricultural products, and mega FTAs. Agriculture Minister Lee Dong-phil explained the performance of the Park Geun-hye government's agricultural policy and the new year's direction for business of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. In each region's conference, presentations were made on "2016 Domestic and Foreign Economic Issues and Korean Economic Outlook" and "2016 Agricultural and Farm Household Economic Trends and Outlook." Also, the departments of grain, fruits and fruit vegetables, vegetables, and livestock made presentations on "Agriculture-related Policy Issues" and "Each Industry's Outlook and Major Policies." The presentations were followed by a heated Q and A session and discussion among farmers, producer groups, and regional public officials as well as discussants. |
