KREI form partnerships for emerging nations’ rural development.

(KREI signs MOUs with GGGI and IRRI on November 9, 2020.)

The Korea Rural Economic Institute signed Memorandums of Understanding with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Seoul on November 9, 2020. Through the agreements, the organizations will collaborate for developing nations’ agriculture and rural development.

KREI will partner with the GGGI for climate change and green growth. With IRRI, it will work together for various research areas, including rural poverty relief, climate change, and food security. Both institutes also cooperate for agricultural policy, market analysis, and impact evaluation.

The GGGI Director-General Frank Rijsberman expressed his expectations on the collaboration with KREI, saying, “Korea’s expertise in rural development will help emerging countries to tackle challenges they face.” IRRI Director-General Matthew Morell emphasized that Korea’s knowledge of agricultural policy and rural development would significantly improve global rice-based agro-food systems.

KREI President Kim Hong-sang showed his confidence in the partnerships, saying, “The partnerships will bring about remarkable outcomes for climate change, food security, and poverty relief by sharing knowledge and expertise in related research areas.”

The GGGI, established to guide developing nations’ green growth plans, supports the emerging countries’ sustainable economic development. IRRI is an international research institute to relieve poverty and hunger by researching rice and other food crops. It developed Tongil, the rice variety, which contributed considerably to Korea’s rural development and economic growth.
