ABSTRACT
The objectives of this study are to collect and analyze data such as production situations, the allocation and shifts of main producing areas, production costs, producing area and wholesale marketing, processing and exports of major vegetables in Shandong province and to present these results to farmers, researchers and policy establishers.
The main contents of this paper are as follows. The planted area of vegetables is increasing while that of grain is decreasing mainly because of the high earnings and Chaeramja project which was established by the government for stable supply of subsidiary foods. The estimated production costs of major vegetables are only 20~50% compared to Korean production costs. The processing firms in Shandong, mainly focused on exports, have been increasing since the latter half of the 1990s. The number of those firms in 2004 is over 2,000 and these are developed toward collective, large and block-connected way. The main producing areas have been shifted from traditional vegetable producing areas, such as Weifang, Linyi to western and southwestern parts of Shandong province, such as Heze, Liaocheng, Dezhou.
This study implicates that the planted areas and production of major vegetables in Shandong will expand to meet the increasing import and domestic demand.
