8th International Symposium on Rural Development 
in Northeast Asia


 

 
    The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) and Pusan National University (PNU) jointly hosted the 8th international symposium on rural development in Northeast Asia. The symposium was held on August 31 at the KREI conference hall under the theme of agriculture and regional development in response to globalization. KREI President Oh Se-Ik delivered a welcoming speech and expressed his wish that the symposium can be a great opportunity to share insights concerning the problems and development direction of agriculture in Northeast Asia. 

   The symposium was held in three sessions. The first session was presided by Professor Lee Tae-Ho of Seoul National University, and presentations were delivered by Director Choi Sei-Kyun of Center for Global Cooperation and Research (KREI) on globalization and structural change of agricultural trade in Northeast Asia and Professor Wu Laping of China Agricultural University on economic growth and rural poverty in the globalizing China. Participating in the discussion were Chun Chan-Ik, research director of Nonghyup Economic Research Institute, and Sakai Tomio, professor of Toyama University, Japan. 

   The second session was presided by Professor Lee Byung-Oh of Kangwon National University. Presentations were delivered by Zhu Jun peng (professor of China Agricultural University) on the decline of traditional agriculture and emergence of city-type agriculture (in the case of Beijing, China), Park Seok-Doo (senior research fellow of KREI) on globalization and development strategy of regional agriculture (Andong City, Gyeongbuk, Korea), and Keisuke Suganuma (professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture) on diversification of the globalizing Chinese agriculture and rice self-sufficiency strategy. After the presentations, Jeon Hyoung-Jin, KREI research fellow, and Cho Jae-Hwan, professor at PNU, took part in the discussions.
 
  The third session was presided by Lee Sang-Hak, professor at PNU. Presentations were delivered by Professor Sakai Tomio of Toyama University on structural change of regional agriculture and rural development - the case of Toyama Prefecture, Professor Wang Ruida of China Agricultural University on growth and characteristics of China's food industry, and Professor Lee Han-Sung of PNU on globalization and worsening of rural problems - the case of Yongguong-myeon, Yecheon County. Taking part in the discussions after the presentations were Suh Jung-Min, planning management center director of Korea Regional Development Foundation, Professor Wu la Ping of China Agricultural University, and Kim Tae-Gon, senior research fellow of KREI.
