2012 Conference for Korean Rural Revitalization

 

 

In an aim to enhance the quality of life in rural areas and develop distinctive villages, the Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) and the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries jointly hosted the '2012 Conference for Korean Rural Revitalization' on November 16 at Grand Intercontinental Hotel Seoul. At the opening ceremony, First Vice Minister Lee Sang-Gil delivered opening remarks and KREI President Lee Dong-Phil delivered the welcoming speech. In the first session following the ceremony, KREI researcher Song Mi-Ryung delivered a keynote speech titled "The Current State of Affairs in Rural Areas and Policy Tasks Seen Through Quality of Life and Local Development Index." Case findings were presented and discussed in the fields of social welfare, public health, and education. In the second session, Kim In-Joong, chief of Rural Policy Division at the ministry, delivered a keynote speech on "Strategies to Make Distinctive Rural Villages a Substantive Success in 2013." The cases of revitalizing rural villages with distinctive characters were presented and discussed.

 

More than 250 participants took part in the conference including village leaders, related government officials and experts. The quality of life at the city and county level was examined through the "quality of life and local development index" and policy tasks and improvement measures were discussed in each field of interest. In addition, the achievement that has been made so far to make 5,000 distinctive villages by 2015 was examined and ways to make substantively distinctive villages were discussed.
